Poor bone quality in young individuals with obesity may result from several mechanisms: increased rate of differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) to adipocytes at the expense of osteoblasts; reduced physical activity that alter the balance between osteoblast and osteoclast activities through the RANK/RANKL and osteoprogerin (OPG) pathways; reduced calcium (Ca2+) availability from the diet owing to the high content of fats.
