Figure 6.

Strong activation in REM and SWS persists into wake. (a) Time course of activation strength for big-REM and reg-REM epochs that were preceded by SWS and followed by wake epochs. In Rest 1, activation was significantly stronger in the 2 min wake following big-REM compared to reg-REM. In Rest 2, activation was significantly stronger in the 2 min of SWS preceding big-REM epochs compared to reg-REM epochs (ANOVA F1,12 = 13.2, p < 0.05). (b) Time course of activation strength for big-SWS and reg-SWS epochs that were preceded by and followed by wake epochs. In Rest 2, activation was significantly stronger in the 90 s of wake preceding (ANOVA F1,4 = 8.4, p < 0.05) and following (ANOVA F1,4 = 9.6, p < 0.05) the big-SWS epochs in Rest 1 as well as Rest 2, compared to reg-SWS.
