Early neuromuscular electrical stimulation improves functional performance after total knee arthroplasty |
| Methods |
31 participants randomized to either a standardized rehabilitation group for 9 weeks post surgery (control group n=14) or a standardized rehabilitation group with additional NMES twice daily for 15 minutes for 6 weeks (experimental group n = 17). |
| Participants |
31 patients with end stage arthritis (20 women and 11 men). |
| Interventions |
Standardized rehabilitation group which included 3 to 5 days on inpatient physical therapy, 2 weeks of home physical therapy and 6 weeks of outpatient physical therapy. In addition the experimental group received NMES twice daily for 15 minutes for 6 weeks. The average NMES dosage was quantified as a percentage of maximal voluntary quadriceps strength. |
