Immunohistochemistry to γH2AX, a DNA damage‐related molecule and 8‐OHdG, a marker of oxidative stress. Nuclear expression of γH2AX was detected in neurones and glia in the MCx (A) and FACx (C) of ALS/MND donors, but no significant difference was found in the proportion of γH2AX+ neurones when compared to controls (E). 8‐OHdG was detected in the cytoplasm and nuclei of neurones and glial cells (MCx, B; FACx, D) of ALS/MND cases. No significant difference was detected in the proportion of 8‐OHdG+ neurones in ALS/MND donors when compared to controls (F). Scale bars represent 50 μm. Controls, n = 9; ALS/MND, n = 10. ALS/MND, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neurone disease; FACx, frontal association cortex; MCx, motor cortex; 8‐OHdG, 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine.
