a) Immunohistochemistry of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, MMP-2, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1 in the superficial region of the normal and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) labrums. MMP-1 positive cells are detected mostly in the superficial layer of the FAI labrum but not in the normal labrum. MMP-2 is detected both intracellularly and extracellularly in the superficial region in the FAI labrum. TIMP-1 is extensively stained in the normal labrum but not in the FAI labrum. b) The percentages of MMP-1 and MMP-2 positive cells in the superficial region of the FAI labrum are significantly increased, compared with the normal labrum. The percentage of TIMP-1 positive cells in the superficial region of the FAI labrum, however, is reduced. Bars represent 50 µm (original magnification 200×). Nuclei are counter-stained with haematoxylin. *p < 0.05.
