Backbone carbon atoms of an unmodified nucleotide compared to the DPA phosphoramidite. The backbone carbon atom in DPA (grey circle) can resemble either (A) a C3′ atom when viewed from the 3′ end or (B) a C4′ atom when viewed from the 5′ end.
