10 Years of Advances in Nutrition

It is hard to believe that Advances in Nutrition has reached its 10-year anniversary! I remember when John Suttie, the inaugural editor, circulated among the Research Interest Sections groups to explain why he was working with ASN to launch a new online review journal, and to encourage submission of review articles. The first issue was published in November 2010 with introductory editorials, 5 review articles, and a nutrient information brief on choline. In his introduction, Dr Suttie said, “I am convinced that the narrowing and specializing of research foci by most researchers suggest that timely reviews are essential in keeping up with advances in most areas of research…. The inevitable expansion of knowledge in an area as broad as nutrition also suggests that students will increasingly need good reviews to keep up with new advances.” When I took the reins in 2013, the journal was well on its way. The opening impact factor was 3.25, ranking in the top 16% of 8500 journals. Further, it was nominated as a Best New Journal and selected as 1 of 3 finalists by the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers. In 2013, we had 122 submissions, already from a global audience, with 70 from North America, 31 from Europe, and 19 from other regions of the world. This all supports the vision and efforts of Dr Suttie. Our acceptance rate at that time was 63%.

Since then, with the support of ASN, its membership, and nutrition researchers around the world, the journal has grown tremendously. Our most recent impact factor was 7.24, placing us in the top 3 of 86 nutrition journals! We have seen major increases in submissions and our acceptance rate has become more selective, at 42% in 2019. Our global reach is clear, as submissions from around the world now exceed those from North America. Importantly, we have added a category for “Perspectives” as we recognize the complexity of views on nutrition and health and welcome discussion in this area. We are grateful to all the individuals who have contributed to this growth, including the excellent editorial board, and the support of ASN. We encourage continued submissions of reviews and perspectives that support the original mission of the Journal—to contribute to advances in the thinking and practice of nutritional science. Thank you to all our contributors and reviewers. This is your review journal and we welcome your input today and in the future.
