Example Quotes and Associated Retention and Engagement Strategies for Theme 2

Theme Exemplar quotes Associated retention/engagement strategy
Theme 2a: Offer flexibility with scheduling and format whenever possible
  • “So, I know you’ve already said that it’s presented with flexibility, but just to make sure that participants know ‘this is how long it will take.' This is how much we allot for it, but if you need more, if you do it in less.” (White Mother, Focus Group, Naïve to eSCCIP)

  • “In that seven-to-five day window, we can schedule it while we’re already there. Give me a laptop. Maybe I don’t have a laptop or internet access at home…” (African-American Father, Interview, Naïve to eSCCIP)

  • Offer telehealth appointments outside of “regular” business hours, including evenings and weekends

  • Meet parents at appointments to encourage completion of modules during “down time”

Theme 2b: Reduce or eliminate common technological barriers
  • “Well, I don’t know if we can be able to do it the whole time, we can try. Yeah, as long as we have a nice Wi-Fi that works, because when we’re here, sometimes it’s not work very good, because they said everybody using it…” (Latina Mother, Interview, Naïve to eSCCIP)

  • “Yeah, because if that was a barrier to getting help, I think that would be a nice olive branch to say if you don’t have a computer we can provide one for you or smart phone” (White Mother, Focus Group, Naïve to eSCCIP)

  • Provide iPads or laptops that can be used during admissions and connected to secure, faster hospital internet

Theme 2c: Providing psychosocial resources beyond intervention completion is crucial
  • “Maybe just on the last page, when you’ve completed it, ‘Here’s a resource’ or having ‘Needing Marriage Counseling?’—there’s a list of some doctors in the area.” Or “Here’s a person you can talk to at the hospital that might be able to sit down and guide you.” (White Mother, Focus Group, Prior eSCCIP exposure)

  • “…that’s why I think it’s really important to have this sort of what next, like have the resources of here are referrals; here are people that you can talk to…” (White Mother, Focus Group, Prior eSCCIP exposure)

  • Develop resource pages that can be accessed from intervention homepage

  • Schedule check-in shortly after completion (e.g., after 2–3 weeks) to determine whether additional follow-up or referrals are indicated
