TFEB overexpression in hepatocytes does not affect hepatocyte proliferation and identity in homeostasis conditions, while it induces differentiation of hepatocytes into ductular reaction (DR)-associated cholangiocytes after injury. Conversely, TFEB overexpression in cholangiocytes induces their proliferation and DR in homeostasis and upon liver injury. On the other hand, TFEB depletion in the liver impairs normal cell regeneration after injury due to reduced induction of Sox9 expression and decreased cell proliferation.
