A schematic on the role of M-opsin in multiple forms of cone degeneration. Mislocalized M/L-opsins are degraded, which causes proteasome stress and dorsal M cone degeneration. Deletion of M-opsin prevents dorsal M cone degeneration. One strategy to protect M/L cones from degeneration is to promote the folding and targeting of M/L-opsins and to enhance proteasome activity.
