Table 1. Infection prevention and control protection classification criteria.

Grade Scope of application Protection requirements
Level 1 protection (I) Persons who conduct medical observation of close contacts of pneumonia cases with COVID-19 infection; (II) sample transport personnel; (III) respiratory fever outpatient and emergency medical staff Wear work clothes (white gown), disposable cap, disposable isolation gown, disposable gloves, and disposable surgical mask (replace once every 4 h or when it feels wet, and replace at any time in case of contamination)
Level 2 protection (I) Persons who conduct epidemiological investigations of close contacts, suspected cases or confirmed cases of pneumonia with COVID-19 infection; (II) persons who perform terminal disinfection at foci of activity; (III) laboratory personnel who process and test specimens in biosafety cabinets; (IV) drivers and medical staff who transport patients; (V) medical staff who enter isolation observation rooms, sickrooms or isolation wards for diagnosis or treatment of novel coronavirus pneumonia or cleaning and disinfection of such rooms Wear a disposable hat, medical protective mask (N95 class or higher), protective goggles (fog-proof) or protective face shield (fog-proof), medical protective clothing or work clothes (white coat), disposable gloves, and disposable shoe covers
Level 3 protection (I) Persons who collect specimens from close contacts, suspected or confirmed cases of pneumonia with COVID-19 infection; (II) persons who may produce aerosols during specimen processing and detection; (III) medical personnel who may produce aerosols through close procedures such as endotracheal intubation, atomization therapy, examination of induced sputum, bronchoscopy, respiratory sputum suction, nursing of tracheal incisions, thoracic physical therapy, nasopharyngeal suction, mask-based positive-pressure ventilation [such as biphasic positive airway pressure (BIPAP) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)], high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, resuscitation, and post-mortem lung biopsy for observed or confirmed cases of pneumonia with novel coronavirus infection; (IV) staff members who process patient blood, secretions, excretions, and corpses In addition to the Level 2 protection requirements, replace fog-proof protective goggles or face shield with full respirator or higher-level respirator with a powered air supply filter (positive-pressure headgear)
