Intraalveolar surfactant material is visible on top of the alveolar epithelium as secreted lamellar body content (a) and as tubular myelin (b) with lattice-like structure. Both are stained, particularly at the outside, with thorium dioxide, like the surface of the alveolar epithelium (arrowheads).
