Different temporal effects of SIRT1 and AMPK on mitochondrial fragmentation. The initial fragmentation of the mitochondrial network induced by inhibition of the Ca2+ transfer to the mitochondria is mediated by SIRT1 deacetylation of cortactin and its effect on the actin polymerization (left panel). Upon prolonged inhibition of Ca2+ transfer to the mitochondria the mitochondrial fragmentation is sustained by AMPK activation, likely through Drp1 (right panel).
