Toxic effects of 2,4‐DNT on planktonic and alginate‐encapsulated S. elongatus CscB.
A. Effect of increasing 2,4‐DNT concentrations (concn.) on the growth of S. elongatus CscB in planktonic cultures, assessed as the optical density measured at 750 nm (OD750).
B. The chlorophyll a [Chl(a)] content in cells of the cultures shown in panel (A) was measured and normalized to that in control cultures with no added 2,4‐DNT.
C. Chl(a) content of alginate‐encapsulated S. elongatus CscB cells after 5 days of exposure to 2,4‐DNT (250 μM) in M3 minimal medium with or without IPTG (1 mM) as indicated. Chl(a) content values were normalized to that in control cultures without any additives.
D. Total sucrose concentration in the culture supernatant of induced (via addition of 1 mM IPTG) cultures of alginate‐encapsulated S. elongatus CscB grown in the presence of different 2,4‐DNT concentrations. In panels (A–C), the mean values for n = 3 are displayed, and error bars represent standard deviations; in panel (D), the mean values for n = 3 with three technical replicates are shown, and error bars represent standard deviations.
