(a) We compared “simple” monophone sounds with “complex” triads, in two different contexts: A reinforcement context with CS+ (reinforced) and CS− (nonreinforced), and a nonreinforcement context with neutral sounds (NS) in which participants were explicitly instructed about the absence of the US.
