Fatty acyl-CoAs have 3 primary fates: entering the mitochondria to be used for energy via oxidation, to form glycerolipids for use in storage or membrane formation, or to be coupled to an amino acid and enter the sphingolipid biosynthesis pathway. Sphingolipids are a diverse class of lipids that represent a minor subset of the lipidome but play critical roles in signaling events.
