Unilateral cochlear implant reliability curve. At 10 years post-implantation: R(t) for all-cause revision surgery is approx. 0.7. Since failure (un-reliability) F(t) = 1 − R(t) = 0.3, then 30% of original patients, implanted at time t = 0, have experienced failure. R(t) for all-cause revision surgery + non-use is 0.63. i.e. F(t) = 0.37 or 37% of original patients have experienced failure involving revision surgery and/or non-use
