Comparison of Mal+ and Mal- mutations across a range of Fλ thresholds. (a) For λ-resistant variants, as determined by F λ below a defined threshold, we calculate the ratio of mutations that are Mal+ or Mal-. As the threshold is decreased below F λ=0.35, this ratio approaches one, although noise increases due to the lower number of mutations under the more stringent threshold. The F malt threshold used for this and all other analyses is 0.5. (b) The distributions of F malt scores below a given threshold of F λ are shown. The median F malt decreases from ~1.0 (equivalent to a synonymous codon) with a high threshold to ~0.5 with a lower threshold at F λ=0.4. However, the median F malt score does not appreciably change if the threshold is decreased further.
