Echocardiography was used to determine the dimensions and contractility of the LV of SGCD−/− pigs (M-38-3, 4, 5) at 5 weeks of age compared with those of age-matched normal animals (WT). Compared with the WT pigs (a), all three SGCD/− animals showed dilated LV cavities during the systolic phase and thin LV walls, as shown in the M-mode echocardiographs (bd). Masson’s trichrome staining of the cardiomyocytes suggested interstitial edema as indicated by the gaps between the cardiac muscle cells in the SGCD−/− pigs (fh) compared with those of WT animals (e).
