LDH activity has been evaluated as marker of anaerobic glycolysis in MNCs isolated from young healthy subjects (CTRL 8–20 yrs, n = 18), adult healthy subjects (CTRL 21–60 yrs; n = 20), elderly healthy subjects (CTRL 61–86 yrs, n = 25) and MDS patients with iron overload (n = 16). Each column represents the mean ± SEM. Data are analyzed by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s multiple comparison test. * indicates a significant difference for p < 0.05 between MDS and CTRL 61–86 yrs; **** indicates a significant difference for p < 0.0001 between MDS sample and the CTRL 8–20 or the CTRL 21–60.
