Increased frequency of intI promoter activation in E. coli strain 536 ihfB⁻ results in a rapid loss of PAI I₅₃₆. Model for the regulation of intI expression by IntI and IHFB. In E. coli strain 536 (left) the expression of intI is strictly regulated by IntI and IHFB. In E. coli strain 536 ihfB⁻ (right) the probability for intI activation is higher than in the wild type.
