Table 1.

Maximum specific growth rates and average specific glucose uptake rates of Escherichia coli strains ZF43ΔgdhA, ECW1, ECW2, and ECW3.

Strains Maximum specific growth rate (h−1) Specific glucose uptake ratea (mmol g DCW−1 h−1)
ZF43ΔgdhA 0.693 ± 0.015 1.032 ± 0.018b
ECW1 0.656 ± 0.002 1.168 ± 0.013b
ECW2 0.565 ± 0.001 0.673 ± 0.033c
ECW3 0.535 ± 0.002 0.295 ± 0.001b
a

The specific glucose uptake rates were calculated during the transition phase between log-growth and stational phases of three strains. The specific glucose uptake rate of ECW2 was calculated at a different time due to its much longer log-growth phase and glucose consumption time (Figure S1). It was notable that components in the 2 × YT medium also contributed to the biomass yield.

b

Calculated on the basis of 8–18 h.

c

Calculated on the basis of 20–30 h.

The results represent the means from three independent experiments.
