Hierarchical cluster analysis and volcano plot reveal distinct clustering of exosome vascular-active microRNA (miRNA) based on severity of peripheral artery disease (PAD). After normalization to a spike-in control, quantitative polymerase chain reaction data from nine miRNAs with cycle threshold values <35 were used to perform a hierarchical cluster analysis (A), which reveals clustering of patients with different severities of PAD based on their miRNA content. In addition, volcano plot analysis (B) shows significantly lower expression of miR-21, miR-92a, miR-126, and miR-143 in mild PAD (mPAD) patients compared with severe PAD (sPAD) patients.
