FIGURE 1

Respiration rates in permeabilized soleus (A) and white gastrocnemius (B) muscles of control and GK rats obtained under leak state (PL,N) and oxphos state (PP) with malate and pyruvate, cytochrome c (Cyt-c), Succinate (SP), uncoupled mitochondria to measure maximal electron transport chain capacity (ET), rotenone (R). Also, ET-R indicates the respiration rate difference between that indicated with ET and R; CIV indicates the respiration rate difference between that with ascorbate plus TMPD and azide; Respiratory acceptor control ratio (RACR). Data are mean ± SEM (n = 6). For soleus, the respiration rate obtained with cytochromes c is 8 ± 3% and 14 ± 7% greater than that in presence of only P for control and GK, respectively. And for white gastrocnemius is 5 ± 4% and 2 ± 2%, respectively.
