Schematic illustration of all investigated experimental conditions. Results on immunophenotyping of PBMCs from healthy donors are obtained for: PBMCs cultured alone; PBMCs in co-culture with Caco-2 cells; PBMCs in co-culture with Caco-2 cells irradiated with a 10-Gy dose of X-rays. The following lymphocytic subsets are identified: helper (CD4+) and cytotoxic (CD8+) T cells, B lymphocytes (CD19+) and NK cells (CD56+). Preliminary zymography measurements and cytokine analysis (Supplementary Material) are performed from the culture medium from the apical and baso-lateral compartment of the co-culture, respectively. The MTT assay is also performed on both cell populations in all investigated conditions. All endpoints are studied as a function of time.
