The symbol ⇓ represents a mismatch against the target (an erroneous nucleotide) and the symbol □ represents a match (a correct nucleotide). The symbol | is appended to the end of the read. The symbolic sequence of the target is represented below, where an open square stands for a match and a closed square stands for a mismatch.
