Reuterin production is increased by interaction with E. coli. Increasing amounts of E. coli DH5α incubated with L. reuteri ATCC PTA-6475 in glycerol solution produced increased reuterin levels. Reuterin levels were monitored by colorimetric change at A₅₆₀, as described by Circle et al. (1945), in three replicate experiments. The wild-type strain ATCC PTA-6475 was incubated with the increasing amounts of E. coli cells indicated on the x axis.
