Plasminogen activator protease (Pla) is essential to promote early bacterial growth in the lungs. Bacterial burden in the lungs of C57BL/6 mice infected intranasally with 104 colony-forming units (CFUs) of wild-type Yersnia pestis CO92 or CO92 lacking pla (CO92 Δpla) at 6, 12, and 24 hours after infection.
