Table 6.

Indications for intravenous iron therapy in children.

  • -Inability of the child to swallow oral iron products

  • -Failure of oral iron therapy (due to poor compliance or side effects)

  • -Inadequate iron absorption due to gastrointestinal diseases (e.g., untreated celiac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, etc)

  • -Ongoing intestinal blood loss

  • -Need for rapid correction of IDA and patient’s preference to avoid transfusion

  • -Functional IDA (e.g., chronic kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis)
