Burns, skin grafts, underlying heterotopic ossification, chronic ulcerations, and sweating can compromise the skin-socket interface. Prosthesis discomfort, residual limb pain, and functional superfluity (functional adaptation where the residual limb is used as a “helper hand” in the absence of a prosthesis) have been linked to prosthesis abandonment.
