Absence of CD4 results in severe poliomyelitis and dorsal root ganglionic inflammation during acute RSA59 infection. Sections of CD4+/+ and CD4−/− mouse spinal cords were stained with H&E and immunohistochemically with anti-CD45. There was increased inflammation of the gray matter (poliomyelitis) and dorsal root ganglia in CD4−/− compared to CD4+/+ mice. Mock-infected mice showed no inflammation. n = 5.
