Stomatal complexes in two model systems. (A) Zea mays (maize) has paracytic stomata. The subsidiary cells dominate the stomatal complex while the guard cells are a pair of small dumbbell shaped cells in the center.(B) Arabidopsis thaliana has both anisocytic stomata with three subsidiary cells and anomocytic stomata with no subsidiary cells. The anisocytic stomatacan be difficult to detect, since the subsidiary cells are variable in size.
