Different bonding preferences between carbon and silicon. (a) Silanones (double-bonded Si=O functional groups), are not favored as compared to geminal silicon diols, which, in contrast to carbon germinal diols, are stable. (b) Geminal silicon diols mimic the unstable hydrated carbonyl.
