Communication in genetic counseling.

  • Take particular care in communicating with patients and families over genetic risk issues, providing updated information of the current state of the art in the field
  • Make it clear that current genetic knowledge is still incomplete, as being a developing issue
  • Be aware that disclosure of results may generate negative and disruptive effects bot for patients and other family members
  • Discuss with the patient the opportunity of sharing genetic information with family members and obtain explicit consent to disclose information
  • Counselors should consider the ethical implications of genetic disclosure and the complexity of psychological consequences and be prepared to offer psychotherapeutic support as part of the consultation process
  • In case of genetic counseling for family planning and abortions, be respectful of patients’ values and decisions
