EV subtypes and role in mediating cellular crosstalk. Schematic representation of three main EV subtypes; (A) exosomes, (B) microvesicles, (C) apoptotic bodies released by all cell types into the extracellular space. Exosomes and microvesicles are released by live cells via exocytosis and outward budding, respectively. Apoptotic bodies, on the contrary, are released by apoptotic cells. EVs are known to mediate intercellular communication by carrying a diverse cargo of proteins, nucleic acids and lipids from the donor cell to the recipient. Adapted from [1].
