(a) Tissue engineering is a highly multidisciplinary field that recruits experts from engineering, materials science, life science, and clinical medicine. (b) In tissue engineering, biocompatible scaffolds act as a temporary template for tissue-specific cell growth and proliferation, and are occasionally incorporated with biomolecules for enhanced cell regulation and tissue regeneration. Upon implantation of the engineered tissue, scaffolds will gradually degrade leaving regenerated tissues or organs with restored functionality.
