Proposed mechanism of ColE9-IUTD threading and binding to OmpF. First, the IUTD associates with the extracellular side of OmpF in a bimolecular fashion (O to C1). The association-induced threading results in the occupancy of the first OmpF subunit by the OBS2 sequence (C1 substep). The translocated OBS1 on the periplasmic side turns and binds to a second OmpF subunit (C1 to C2).
