NOX expression and function in cardiac fibrosis. In the fibrotic heart, NOXs have been implicated in cardiomyocyte apoptosis and hypertrophy. NOXs are also involved in the differentiation of mesenchymal fibroblasts into myofibroblasts that deposit exuberant ECM.
