Description of wheat root traits scored from shovelomics samples

Trait	Abbreviation	Description
Root angle	RA	The angle between two lines originating at the base of the plant at ground level which fits the angle of the majority of the crown roots in a 2D image of the whole plant using the user defined angle tool function within ImageJ (Rueden et al., 2017) analysis software (Fig. 1).
Crown root number	CRN	Number of roots originating from the base of the plant at ground level.
Nodal root number	NRN	The number of roots originating from the first node.
Seminal root number	SRN	The number of roots originating from the germinated seed below the coleoptile.
