Peri-adolescent rats (PD 25) were exposed to intermittent (2 day on/ 2 day off) ethanol exposure (AIE) until the end of adolescence (PD 55) or where gavaged with water (Con). Two-months post-treatment there was no consequences of AIE on behaviorally-activated acetylcholine (ACh) efflux in the hippocampus. However, as the AIE rats aged (12-months post AIE), a blunting of behaviorally-activated ACh efflux within the hippocampus emerged. Also, there was an overall effect of age on ACh efflux, as 14-month old rats had lower level of behaviorally-activated hippocampal ACh efflux than 3-month old rats.
