Opposite bottlenecks? The Plaids and Stripes Hypothesis predicts that megafauna flourished during times of rapid climate change, with coincident peaks in their population sizes and the degree of genetic panmixis (indicated by width of coloured lines). Microfauna that were unable to disperse fast enough to keep up with the changing climate would have experienced the opposite trends.
