“P_” means phonological form; “St_” means stressed syllable; “Pw_” means phonological form of a whole word; the following letters indicate the phonological transcription of the word or syllable or part of the syllable. The German words which are associated here by the deep form, e.g., “SEE” are “schaelen” (to peel) and “Schere” (scissors). The phonological level is comprised of two layers: the deep layer and the surface layer, which interact with each other. Seen in more detail, the phono_deep layer itself splits into different layers. For example, /S22n/ refers to /S22/; and /S22/ refers to /S/.
