Direct action of alcohol on the pancreas is caused by toxic influence on acinar, ductal, and stellate cells. Importantly, multiple genetic and environmental factors are involved and play a substantial role in developing alcoholic pancreatitis. Protective genetic variants decreasing the risk of disease have recently been described.
