Influence of alcohol on pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs) causes production of acetylaldehyde (via oxidative metabolism pathway) and causes a significant increase in oxidative stress. Excessive alcohol intake increases also circulating levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as well as TNF-α which activate PSCs and create a proinflammatory microenvironment which promotes pancreatic fibrosis.
