Multiple roles of cholesterol in glutamatergic synaptic transmission. The scheme shows processes affected by acute cholesterol depletion, thus summarizing components of synaptic transmission where endogenous cholesterol plays an active role. Disruption of action potential propagation is shown here as it is the most probable hypothesis explaining AMPAR eEPSC decrease after cholesterol depletion. Cholesterol depletion-induced synaptic delivery of AMPARs is not included in the scheme as this phenomenon is relatively weak (25% increase in synaptic AMPARs in our experimental conditions) compared to other phenomena in the scheme.
