Forest plots of weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for the circulating levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in stroke versus non-stroke patients. As shown in Fig. 3, four studies were included in the analysis. The result showed that mean TMAO concentrations was 2.20 μmol/L higher in patients with stroke compared with non-stroke controls (WMD: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.21–3.18, P < 0.001), with a significant heterogeneity (I2 = 99.7%, P < 0.001).
