Rats with neurotoxic lesions of the hippocampus (LES) were impaired relative to control rats (CON) at solving a serial feature negative (sFN) problem (A+, B→A−), but their performance was much less affected in the serial feature positive (sFP) problem (A−, B→A+), showing that the hippocampus is needed to inhibit appetitive responding by using the negative feature cue as a signal of nonreinforcement of the target.
