Components of a tooth germ and surrounding tissues. Mouse first lower molar germ at ED14.5 exhibits a clear subdivision of dental mesenchyme including the dental papilla (blue) and dental follicle/dental sac (green). Cells of the dental papilla show neither specific shape nor spatial organization. Conversely, cells of the dental sac show an elongated shape being arranged in concentric rings (green). The contemporaneous presence of increased cell density, their specific shape and pattern are criteria for the determination of the dental sac boundary.
