Schematic representation of the binding pathway. Electrostatic interactions are the driving force causing the formation of the encounter complex. As the binding partner further approach, the binding interface have to align, especially at the prime site, and the remaining water molecules have to be displaced to allow the optimal shape complementarity in the native complex.
