Determination of the therapeutic index of the more active and less toxic berberine derivatives. Best berberine derivatives were selected based on their high antimicrobial activity and low toxicity. The therapeutic index of each derivative was calculated by dividing its IC50 value on a specific human cell type by its MIC value on S. aureus.
